Gary Caroline led the case to release a young Algerian Canadian, Abderrahmane Ghanem. Ghanem was rendered to Algeria and detained on the charge of being affiliated with a Canadian terrorist group. He was acquitted of this ludicrous allegation in June 2017 after enduring 13 months in an Algerian prison. Gary was engaged by the Ghanem family and worked to convince Canada to adopt a more aggressive stance with the Algerians. This required extensive efforts with Canadian and Algerian government officials and in the media to counter Canada’s national security service attempt to contract the prosecution of this innocent Canadian to a country with lesser standards of human and legal rights.
